The Pottery Barn Christmas formula
Put a few catalog pages side by side and the same choices repeat. Once you see them, you can shop for the look instead of the label.
- Greenery that looks real: cedar and pine with soft, drooping tips, layered thick.
- One rich texture plus one cozy one: velvet with cream cable knit, or velvet with a simple plaid.
- Warm metals: aged brass and mercury glass. Never bright silver tinsel.
- A small palette: deep green, cream and gold, with red as a single accent at most.
- Warm white light everywhere: fairy lights inside the greenery, candles on every surface.
Everything below fits that formula. If you only buy three things, make them the garland, the stockings and the votives.
Stockings and the mantel
The mantel is where this look lives or dies, and the secret is fullness. One thin garland draped across a mantel always looks store-bought. Two garlands twisted together, with loose stems tucked in, look like the real thing.
- Lay the first garland along the mantel and let the ends hang 12 to 18 inches down each side.
- Twist the second one loosely over it so the tips point in different directions.
- Fluff every branch, bending the tips down and out. It takes about 20 minutes and makes the biggest difference of anything on this page.
- Fill thin spots with loose pine stems, then weave fairy lights deep inside the greenery, not on top of it.

For stockings, mix instead of match: velvet and cream knit alternating looks collected over the years. Space them evenly with a hand's width between each. For an all-white version of this mantel, see our neutral Christmas decor from Amazon.
The tree
Catalog trees use a tight palette, usually champagne, cream and gold with one deeper accent. Ribbon does more for a tree than any number of extra ornaments.
- Pick two ornament finishes in one color family, like shiny and matte champagne, and add one textured accent.
- Skip tinsel. Cut velvet ribbon into 12 to 18 inch tails and tuck them vertically into the branches, or tie small bows about a foot apart.
- Choose a topper with a glow. A capiz or brass star looks warmer than a glittery plastic one.
- Light from the inside: push each strand toward the trunk so the tree glows instead of looking wrapped.
- 06

The table and the entry
Candlelight is the cheapest way to make a room look like a photo shoot. Group mercury glass votives in odd numbers down the table, add brass taper holders at different heights, and use unscented ivory tapers so the food is what everyone smells.
Mercury glass trees on a console or sideboard add height without taking up space, and a few brass bells on the front door handle are an old-fashioned touch guests always notice.
For the door, a 22 to 24 inch wreath suits a standard 36-inch front door. Go bigger only on a double door or a very tall entry, and hang it with the center a little above eye level.
- 10

Hosting before December? Our Thanksgiving table decor edit uses the same candles-and-greenery idea for November.
Buy now or wait?
Buy the things that sell out first now. Realistic garlands, velvet stockings and anything in deep green velvet tend to disappear by early December, and restocks often arrive after the holiday. Candles, ornaments and fairy lights are easy to find until the last shipping week.
Check the delivery date on each listing before you check out. Garlands and wreaths sometimes ship from far away and take longer than two days, so order them by mid-November if you want the mantel done by December 1.

Questions people ask
Are these Pottery Barn products?
No. These are Amazon pieces chosen because they create a similar look. The Muse Shelf isn't affiliated with Pottery Barn.
How do I make a cheap garland look full?
Use two garlands per mantel, twist them together, fluff every tip and tuck in loose stems. Fairy lights woven deep inside hide the wire core.
What colors are in the Pottery Barn Christmas look?
Deep green, cream and warm gold or brass, with natural textures like wood and knit. Red shows up as a single accent, such as a velvet ribbon or berries, not as the main color.
